I have F series Navman which is 2 years old but can buy new cards for it which cost about £40 pounds. I know my way around Britain pretty well so I sometimes come into conflict with it but driving in France I am totally dependent on it. I can honestly say in France it has never let me down & on that basis I would rate it 8 out of 10.

We have a Medion GoPal which we updated this year. It is still out of date for the south of France but that is hardly surprising considering the rate at which the French are building new roads. Apart from that, it is fairly reliable and tends to be quite sensible when it decides the route. Rated 8/10
The only caveat I would offer is that one still has to be careful when obeying the instructions of the machine. Just because it says "Turn right" does not mean that the road is suitable for your vehicle. In France (and in the UK) our satnav told us turn right or left and the road was totally unsuitable. I would not have taken the car on to the road never mind the car and caravan. It is all really a case of applying a bit of common sense and not blindly following the instructions. We also find it useful to trace the satnav route on the map to see if there are any obvious glitches. It is not the first time we have ignored the instructions and taken to a ring road instead of going through the centre of towns when we knew from the map that the ring road existed. If you are firm in your resolve, the satnav will sort itself out. There are satnavs out there which can be programmed for the size of your vehicle in terms of width, height, length and weight but they tend to be specialist and expensive.
It must be emphasised that there is no reason whatsoever to throw the map away. Half the fun of travelling is working out where you are going to go.

I use a Navigon 2150 max which I bought as an end of line from Halfords earlier in the year. Has full European Coverage and four downloadable updates a year, regeristing the item within 30 days gave me a deal of 3 years of updates for just £15. Can choose type of vehicle and route you want to take, car, motorbike, or the one I have set as default, lorry. Then a choice of fastest, shortest, scenic routes. postcode entry, even for Europe, or town and street. Also has built in tmc, picks up signals from radio stations, if a road is closed, will re-route around, similar to tom tom live, but at no extra cost. Another bonus is that it has built in bluetooth handsfree, not the highest of quality, but better than some I have heard, and a SD slot, so can whip the card out of me camera and view on a larger screen, 4.3 inch widescreen. It has an external antenna input, which is the same as an old acer pda I used before, this helps speed up time taken to work out where it is. Before the reduction it was up at £249, but on clearance I picked it up for £130.

Use a Tom Tom 701 easy to use7/10,but for more info also have computer built into car running Memory Map,with 7"touchscreen mounted on screen by a sucker mount and can access Google maps through wifi.So in theory should not get lost.

We have a Tom Tom 740 Live. Good points.. keeps updating while on route to where every we are going, if it finds a faster route then asks if we want to go that way, tells us if the route is blocked (motorways) & how long it will add to our journey,can show alsorts like low bridges,where to get the cheapest fuel where we are, updates on our computor with quite alot of info. Bad Points.. Pay monthly for the updates + the live updates while on the road, the battery life when not plugged into the car isn't long.

We have an 'RAC' satnav (has their branding on). It's about 3 years old but has only steered us wrong once. Good Points... Easy to use can choose vehicle type, so alway choose 'Lorry' when towing updates route as you drive quite quickly Shows hospitals, pharmacies, fuel, PUBS (incredibly important) & cashpoints (important always!!) & other PoI. Screen can be made suitable for those who are colourblind, & has 'night' mode Postcode search standard CHEAP!!!! (well, was when we bought it, £99)
Poor points... No map updating No traffic updating Battery life (but learnt if I use the lead from the camera, it will charge from the laptop which as Hubby has lost the lead is invaluable!!)
Hubby had a TomTom when he was with his last employer & he reckoned it was OK, but sent him up farm tracks a few times rather than where he was meant to be.
Personally, I'm after a TomTom which can have different voices downloaded - I sooo want Ozzy Osbourne & Yoda for the fun factor!!!

Had the RAC same as Abigailsmum, you can get the maps updated at a cost of £40 just ring the helpline number on the unit. We upgraded to a F series navman in June, that unit expired last week in Derbyshire displaying a Fatal Error has occurred !!, the unit was promptly returned to point of purchase (Morrisons) for a full refund. Now awaiting delivery (tomorrow) of a Garmin 1310 from Tesco, I will comment on performance once we have tried it on a few journeys.

I have got the Garmin 250w. It is great as long as you put the right info in. I am still trying to work out everything it has on it, as me and these technical things don't mix. I am going to take up the offer of lifetime updates for £99. The main reason for this is this year we got fed up with driving across fields (according to the satnav) but in actual fact we were on the new N150 from Saints to Royan.
As Dickers said you have got to use your common sense about taking the turning if it seems a bit small.

Hi I ove my Tom Tom Sat Nav I am really bad at directions and always get lost. This summer I travelled around South and found my way to Somerset, Devon, Brighton Bournmouth and many many more places visiting campsites to go on my website. As im sure you all know some of these sites are really hard to find but I had no problem at all. Only made one slight error whilst looking at my sat nav i thought it was 1 way reaffic down this road so started driving past all these stationary cars only to finde out it was 2 way traffic and had a car heading straight for me. OOOps nearly hit it but luckily have very quick reations. Even named my sat nav Ami. Also why is it the sat navs take you the quickest route to a place but bring you back a different way??? cant work that one out .... it has to be just as quck to go back the same ways don't it ..... ummmm not to sure on that one.
