It depends on what type of car jack.

I know a lot of people buy cheap 2T trolley jacks to use with their caravans. Placed under the axle

The 2 main things to consider is the weight (lifting) rating of the Jack and the Stability.
Also you should not Jack the van up using the Chassis, unless it has a jacking bracket bolted to it. Place the Jack under the axle, as with the trolley jack.

My Caravan was supplied with a Scissor Jack it looks very similar to some car scissor jack except it has a locating spigot at the top to locate in to the Al-co Jacking bracket.
