Thanks for the advice. Have now cleaned the paint off with some wet and dry paper. Took about 3/4 hour to fully clean it all off. Was going to try paint remover but never had any to hand. Still can not understand why paint them in the first place, if it was to protect against rust surely just a light coating of grease on just the ball would suffice as mine came sealed in a plastic bag. Pretty sure the paint is actually protective so it doesn't go rusty between manufacture and sale. With regard to grease - definitely a no-no, alko stabilisers and grease are NOT compatible, it damages the friction pads apparently. So always make sure your towball is clean and grease free; if in doubt use brake cleaner to degrease the ball and always keep a cover on it when not hitched up.
