Well the fridge works fine on gas and 240V but for some reason the light on the fridge for the 12v does not light up i have checked the fuses and there ok this should work of the 12v battery??? on the control panel of the van i select caravan and the 12v system work but no light on the fridge
It is a big mistake to try to run the fridge on 12v DC from the caravan battery. It draws about 8 amps which means that a 110Ah battery would be effectively dead in about 6 or 7 hours.
If your caravan/car 12S or 13 pin plug/socket is wired conventionally, the light will come on and the fridge will run on 12v DC only when the switch on the fridge is in the "on" position and the engine is running. The current required comes from the car battery which is being continually recharged from the alternator. As soon as the car engine stops, a relay in the system cuts out the voltage to the caravan until the engine is running again. Thus, no current is being drawn from the car battery or the caravan battery.
There is also a relay arrangement which allows the car alternator to charge the caravan battery when the engine is running and cuts out when the engine stops.
Because of the relay arrangement, charging the battery and feeding the fridge only occur when the alternator is producing volts i.e. the engine is running.
Have to say, we never run the fridge on 12v other than in transit, once on site, we switch to 240v or gas.
It really uses so little gas, so if on a site with no EHU, I'd do that if I were you. If cool down time is an issue, then a trick we use is to fill some plastic take away type containers 75% full, freeze them at home & pop them in when leaving with all of the beer, wine & food, & by the time you get to your destination, with the 12v in use, the fridge is nice & cold (& so, most importantly, is the beer & wine!!)
Hope that helps, but like Dickers says, 12v isn't really ever going to be sufficient (unless you can have a genny running all day & night!!)
many thank we carn't run the fridge on 12v only works on the gas or mains it's just my son's medication needs to be kept chillded but if the 12v works when the car is attached i will do waht you say and freeze some ice packs and use the 12v just when traveling cheers for the help
Well i have found out what the problem is the socket on the car that a pro wired up it is done the old way and has a relay my friendly family dealer says i need a auto switch control relay OK so he fitted one and it worked light comes on if the car stops it then works on the van battery which it does never even thought to check that he said it charges the van and runs the fridge when there is enough voltage he said the new cars are even more complicated
Thanks again every one
