I have been looking for a while for a 1008 to replace our damaged NR, now two have turned up at once and I'm going to view them tomorrow (Wed evening). One is a Trio Sport - ten years old but not used for last 5 and in great condition, the other is a Starcamp only used a couple of times. Both have all the bits you would expect - curtains, skirt, steel poles etc. Have contacted both sellers and they seem genuine and assure me they are in good condition. Would anyone recommend one over the other? They are both selling for 250.
Thanks, going to view tonight with my husband. I know sellers can be economical with the truth that's why we are definitely viewing before purchase but just thought someone may have experience of either awning to warn us off one or other and make it easier to choose! Thanks again
Buying secondhand awnings can be a nightmare. If you buy from a dealer, you have some comeback if there is a problem. If buying privately and there is a problem, you are stuck with it.
It really is a case of "caveat emptor"
If they have been stored for a long time, in one case you say 5 years, pay particular attention to the material. If they were put away damp, they may have rotted or become mouldy. If made from acrylic materials, it is unlikely that they will have rotted unlike canvas. If they are around ten years old, they will most likely be acrylic but it is best to check. Canvas is not a good idea as they will rot eventually. If they are mouldy, walk away. If they smell musty, it may only be because they have been folded up for a long time but, again, I would be tempted to walk away.
If they are 10 years old, are they canvas or acrylic? If canvas and they smell musty definitely look for mould. If acrylic, it may just that they haven't been aired for a while. Get them opened out so that you can examine them carefully for tears, cuts, patches, repairs and so on.
I would be very wary of a 10 year old Awning, as Dickers said examine it very carefully. Have you had a look on the Dorema site for a new one, they do have a clearance sale on with some very good deals.
Thanks to all who replied! We only viewed the Starcamp and it was obviously almost new. It had been used a couple of times and the curtains had never been used. We are delighted as we didn't want to spend too much. Going to pack caravan, kids, dog and canoe and head off to our local Luss site for the holiday weekend and try it out. (weather permitting....)
Luss is a lovely part of the country. Many years ago we were supposed to stay on the C & CC site there, but they wanted to see all sorts of insurances to let us use our little dingy with a 2hp Outboard, so we went over to the other side of the loch and stayed at Cashel instead.
