After being an ardent fan of the caravan since 1982, I decided to take the plunge after losing my Wife and Soulmate Maureen and trade our Bessie in for a Motorhome. I bought Moggie the motorhome a year ago last month. Although the Bessacarr 424 is sold as a 4 berth, I would say it is better suited to being a couples vehicle. I have covered 1500 miles in my first year of ownership and have enjoyed it. When there was two of us arriving on site we had our own jobs and it meant we could be ready to holiday in about 30 - 40 mins. But being on my own now it was taking me about an hour to get set up.
What a breeze the motorhome has been, just getting out to turn on the gas and plug in the EHU the kettle is on within 10 mins. Living with my motorhome this season has meant I can go when and where ever I want. Swift have been good, the carried out a modification recall on the drop down bed. And Fiat have recalled the engine for EGR pipes. Swift are now dealing with the only faults I have had under warranty, that is a warped wardrobe door, a water leak on the Shurflo pump, a seized water dump valve and a problem with the leisure battery.
I'm sure Maureen would have agreed with the changes and the ease of use. If I plan a trip where there is a problem with transport links, I tow a small trailer with my trusty Fiat Panda onboard, this then gives me good mobility. The dimensions are good too, instead of a 26.5ft caravan being towed by a 15.5ft 4x4, the motorhome is a shade under 19ft and the trailer is only 15ft. Fuel wise it is slightly better when towing the trailer than it was pulling the caravan.
I am looking forward 2019, I intend to start in April, unless the weather is better than this year. Nevertheless, a 2 week trip covering Essex, Kent, Hampshire and South Wales is on my plan.

Les, I bought a charger from Halfords some 10 years ago and it is still going strong. I bought this model, although not cheap because it covered a range of batteries from lead acid to sealed leisure Gel types. Just looked on Halfords site and it isn't sold by them anymore, but a similar model retails at £60.

That's me done for this year, took Moggie the motorhome in for it's first services, £435 for chassis and habitation. 4 items for warranty, cupboard door warped, fresh water dump valve seized, leisure battery not hold charge and a water leak from the pump.

Hi Al, Glad to see that you are using Moggie. Reference using the aquaroll etc., if you go out for the day, would it make sense to call at the MH service point on the way back? Dump and fill up, job done. But I'm not a MH-er so I may be talking tripe which is not unusual. If you don't go out for the day then it's back to the drawing board. Roy............(Dickers) Hi Roy, I now have a trailer on which I will tow a small car, so initially I will only visit the service point when I arrive or leave the site. The small car option means that I have no serious parking issues when I go out for the such as height restrictions or having to go out early to get a decent spot to park.

I plan to use the MH service points on arrival and before leaving a site. But I suppose its the long in the tooth caravanner in me, but I still will carry on using the Aquaroll and Wastemaster once pitched up. What do others do, is this normal or am I just odd?

A few weeks ago I received a letter from Swift about the pull down bed on Moggie, I phoned them and was told they had some issues with the pull down bed. I have booked an Engineer to come out and check and modify if needed. After previous owner in the past have complained about Swifts aftersales service I must say I was quite impressed.

Many thanks David and Mike, things have now moved on since my post and I am in the process of my latest purchase. The supplier is taking our "Bessie" in part ex. More to follow soon. I have decided to go with a trailer as the safest option. So this well known East Anglian company are arranging the fitting of a tow bar, now I need to source a trailer.
