Slightly Hitched

Hi - my partner and I have been thinking of trying caravanning. We have three young kids and are keen to try it out, mainly to have the means for weekends away. I have never towed before and will probably go on one of the courses available, even though my age makes this an option rather than a requirement. My big question is whether my car is up to the job. I have a 2010 Mercedes C200 2.1 automatic estate. As it is, the car fits my bill perfectly and has never had the need for anything other than a routine service & MOT. The mileage is low for it's age and it feels like it has years of life ahead of it. I am not totally opposed to changing my car, but would rather not do that for a couple of years yet.
I have seen a Lunar Quasar that would be ideal for us as a first van - 2009 model, MTPLM 1382kg. That on paper is just within the 85% recommended limits (as long as my internet searches have returned the correct figures), but I am guessing that alone does not make a good match. I am unsure if the van comes with any stability control, but believe this can be fitted retrospectively if not? I am sure we would love weekends away in a caravan, it is more the towing that is the issue. I am not a nervous driver, but would only consider caravanning with a stable outfit with a car that was up to the job.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I would have thought that the Lunar would come with an ALKO Stabilising hitch head on it. If not one can easily be fitted. What type of Ball do you have fitted to the Merc? If it is a 'Swan Neck' you should be OK, if it is a 'Bolt On' then it has to be an Alko Bolt On, these have more clearance than the Standard Ball. Stability is also affected by the way you load the van, heavy items down low and over or as near to the axle as possible.
As you say on Paper your intended outfit sounds perfect. A Towing course would be a good idea as you have not towed before.
When buying a Caravan look out for the dreaded Damp, has the van been serviced regularly are all the Damp Test reports present. Trooper
