Hi to everyone, I am waiting to take possession of a vw caravelle t6.1 and will be towing a swift caravan. Has anyone had problems with a euro 6 engine not charging the leisure battery or running the fridge whilst towing, if you have how did you overcome the problem?

Not always the engine, but the electrical system built into the newer vehicles, if your vehicle has a "smart" charging system this can sometimes restrict charging additional batteries.

Hi to everyone, I am waiting to take possession of a vw caravelle t6.1 and will be towing a swift caravan. Has anyone had problems with a euro 6 engine not charging the leisure battery or running the fridge whilst towing, if you have how did you overcome the problem? If the towing vehicle has been wired up correctly, there should not be a problem. Check that the appropriate charging/fridge circuit wiring from the towcar to has been installed. The charging circuit from the towing vehicle is on the 12S (grey) socket or the appropriate pins 13 pin system. UK caravans built prior to September 2008 (2009 Models) were built using the 12N/12S plug system. UK caravans built from September 2008 onward were built using the 13 pin system. Has your towing vehicle been wired with a black 12N (caravan road lights) plug and a grey 12S (ancillaries) plug? If it has, the feed for the caravan battery and the fridge are on the grey 12S plug. The connection for the battery charging +ve is through pin 2 (blue wire) and the earth return is through pin 3 (white wire). The fridge +ve is on pin 6 (red wire) and the earth return is through pin 3 as for the battery charging. Note that the fridge supply will only be available with the ignition on the towing vehicle on. I am not sure what the connections are for the battery charging and the fridge on the 13 pin system. If your towing vehicle has the 12N/12S system and the caravan has the 13 pin system, adaptors are available to convert one to the other with the correct connections. There are also adaptors available to connect vehicle 13 pin systems to the 12N/12S system on the caravan. The Net is the best place to look for adaptors. The wiring pack has all the connectors and lengths of wire you are likely to need including a pair of relays to switch off the supply to the battery and the fridge when the ignition is not on and the engine is not running. This is to stop the battery and the fridge taking power from the towing vehicle starting battery. Normally, the relay controlling the battery charging will only function when the engine is running i.e., the alternator/dynamo is producing sufficient voltage to activate the relay. Hope this helps but as always the rider is that it is difficult to sort out answers at long range. Dickers.

As sorento 08 said it has a smart alternator, the alternator idles once the engine has been started and I believe it only maintains the car battery at 80% I might be wrong. The towbaris factory fitted and has 13 pin , caravan will also be 13 pin. I have read that I might have to fit a b2b charger in the caravan so I can run the fridge and keep the leisure battery charged. Hopefully someone has come across this problem.
